Aragonese Castle

In the 1400s, Ferdinand I of Aragon managed to definitively conquer Castrovillari.

This period gave rise to the Aragonese Castle, which, completed in 1480, was not designed to protect the citizens but to curb the continuous uprisings of the people of Castrovillari, who had always been hostile to the Aragonese. This purpose is evidenced by the Latin inscription under the coat of arms above the castle entrance:

AD CONTINENDOS IN FIDE CIVES.

Madonna del Castello: Worship and History of Times Gone By

In 1090, Roger Arenga, after besieging the town of Castrovillari, sent workers to begin laying the foundations of the feared fortress. However, during the construction, the walls of the fortress built during the day mysteriously collapsed during the night.

This event astonished the count, who, feeling proud, ordered the workers to dig deeper into the rock to reinforce the castle's foundations. It was during the final phase of excavation that the miracle occurred: the discovery, made by the workers carrying out the construction, of an image depicting the Madonna with Child, painted on a wall. Upon seeing the sacred image, the workers fell to their knees, the people gathered and cried out in awe of the miracle, and the count ordered that instead of the castle, a sanctuary be built, at the center of which was placed the image of the Madonna, who from then on became known as the Madonna del Castello. The people, overjoyed by the grace they had received, gathered around the Virgin, paying her endless honors and praise, proclaiming her the Patroness of the City.
